How Braces Work
Braces work by applying constant pressure to your teeth. As your teeth are moved into place, your bones adjust to their new position.
Braces are made up of 3 main components. First, brackets are attached to the front of your teeth with super strong adhesive glue. Second, a thin wire is threaded through these brackets and tightened. Finally, rubber bands are added to hold the wire in place. You may also have bands connecting the top and bottom jaws to help adjust your bite.
At your first orthodontic appointment, Dr. McDonough will take a scan of your teeth. Then our team makes a plan for your orthodontic treatment. For example, the positioning of brackets and tightening of your wire will differ depending on if you have a crossbite vs. an overbite.
Why Kids Need Braces
The most common reasons for braces are bite problems, such as overbites, underbites, and crossbites. Braces can also fix more serious misalignments. Kids should visit an orthodontist by the time they turn 7. This is the age when your adult teeth start growing in and any orthodontic issues become apparent. This doesn’t mean your child will get braces when they turn 7. This will just give your orthodontist a headstart to give you recommendations on what treatment will be best.
